ABSTRACT
Bromadiolone-Second generation anticoagulant rodenticide induced nephrotoxicity on lesser bandicoot rat Bandicota bengalensis (Gray and Hardwicke)
J. Baskaran
ABSTRACT
The lesser bandicoot rat, Bandicota bengalensis Gray and Hardwicke is the most predominant rodent pest species in agricultural and commensal situations. Use of rodenticides is the most common method to control rodents. Bromadiolone (BDL), a second generation anticoagulant rodenticide was tested on B. bengalensis for its effects on kidney at varied time intervals. Seven groups of six animals each were selected for experiment. Animals were fed with bromadiolone (0.005%) for 6 days in no-choice test in the form of cake bait (mixed in plain WSO) at 12 hrs, 24 hrs, 48 hrs, 72 hrs 96 hrs and 120 hrs. Results revealed significant alteration in the serum and urinary biomarkers with increased levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, lipid hydroperoxides, protein carbonyl content, and conjugated dienes in BDL treated rats.
