ABSTRACT

Veterinary Medicine and Paraprofessional Roles: Ensuring Animal Health and Welfare

Tekwani Ryan, Moseley González-Maeso*

ABSTRACT

Veterinary medicine is a branch of medical science focused on the health and well-being of animals, encompassing the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, disorders, and injuries. Beyond clinical care, this field also addresses livestock management, breeding, nutritional research, and the production of animal-derived products. Veterinary practice spans a wide variety of animal species, including both domestic and wild animals, and deals with a diverse spectrum of health conditions. While veterinary medicine is often delivered under professional supervision, it is sometimes practiced without direct oversight. Licensed veterinarians—also referred to as veterinary surgeons or “vets”—are primarily responsible for diagnosing and treating animal health issues. Supporting them are para-veterinary professionals, including veterinary nurses and technicians, who play vital roles in healthcare delivery. Additionally, specialists in areas such as animal physiotherapy, dentistry, and hoof care (farriers) provide targeted expertise that enhances overall veterinary services. Keywords: Veterinary medicine; Animal health; Disease prevention; Livestock management; Paraveterinary personnel; Animal welfare.
